Na série, criada por Alan Ball, Peter Krause é Nathaniel "Nate" Fisher Jr., filho do dono de uma funerária que relutantemente se torna sócio do negócio da família com o seu irmão David, estrelado por Michael C. Hall. A família Fischer também inclui a mãe Ruth (Frances Conroy) e a irmã Claire (Lauren Ambrose). Incluem-se em torno da família o assistente da funerária, o amigo Federico Diaz (Freddy Rodriguez), a namorada e eventual esposa de Nate chamada Brenda Chenowith (Rachel Griffiths), e o namorado (e eventual marido) de David, o polícial Keith Charles (Mathew St. Patrick).
